Implementing Restorative Justice in Youth Justice Settings: Shared Practice Model

Introduction to the e-course

This CPD-certified e-course (TBC) aims to train professionals within and adjacent to the youth justice system in England and Wales. The ecourse is based on a co-designed Shared Practice Model for restorative justice in youth justice settings, designed to help overcome inconsistencies that are currently present in applying restorative justice in this context. The course’s aim is to support best practice and an evidence-informed, ethical approach to what works, helping to ensure that young people and those affected by harm have equitable access to high-quality restorative justice opportunities. The ecourse is funded by the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) as part of the programme “Restorative justice the evidence: A pilot for the youth justice system of England & Wales” by RJ4ALL. The project is supported by the Youth Justice Board, and this ecourse is a key deliverable of the programme which has ambition to impact on all Youth Justice Services in England and Wales.

The course is composed of 4 modules including the 10 Step Shared-Practice Model of the Practical Framework. Free tools to help you build a reflective and consistent restorative practice are included. The 4 modules of  the programme of this course reflect the 4 parts of the Guide leading to the Shared Practice Model:

(1) Conceptual Framework
(2) Legislative and Policy Framework
(3) Practical Framework (10 Step Shared-Practice Model)
(4) Evaluation Framework (Supplementary)

Anticipated learning time, certification, accessibility and supporting material

Successful completion will lead to 10 points of CPD (Continuous Professional Development) Certification.

It takes approximately 10 non-stop hours to fully complete all modules and take the test. Additional reading material is also provided for further learning and research. For a more advanced learning experience (reviewing all additional reading material and learning videos), it takes up to 10 hours to complete the course (optional)

Acquiring the CPD certifications is dependent on successful completion of the course including passing the final test which is timed 30 minutes. A resit is also possible.

The e-course includes software that makes it accessible in various languages and for those with visual and hearing impairments. This course’s interactive tools are based on H5P. To learn more: overview of the accessibility of the various H5P content types.

Target groups:

This is an e-course that has global reach, aiming to reach:

• Professionals working within restorative justice services in the youth justice service (YJS) across England and Wales.
• Criminal justice and youth justice practitioners in formal (e.g. probation, police, prisons) and informal (e.g. community, safer neighbourhood, schools, PRUs) settings
• Professionals and community service providers working with people who have been affected by harm (i.e. victims of a crime, mental health supports, etc.).
• Victim support officers and other professionals supporting victims of crime.
• Policy makers and researchers interested in the application of restorative justice in youth justice settings.

The ecourse and certification is free for the project’s participating Youth Justice Service teams. They can contact their RJ4All Officer for access or use the Code that has been provided to them.

As a non-profit NGO, RJ4All is pleased to offer this e-course at a subsidised cost to non-participating services.  Institutions, universities, bar associations and public sector organisations are welcome to contact us for license purchase for any e-course that might be of interest. The costs for purchasing a license are:

• Unlimited license for 1 e-course for 1 year: £600
• Unlimited license for 3 e-courses or more for 1 year: £1,500
• Unlimited license for 1 e-course for 3 years: £1,500
• Unlimited license for 3 e-course or more for 3 years: £4,000
